Jones found a lead that they lay in Peru, so he enlisted the newest member of the Adventure Society for help. In 1934, while in South America, Oxley asked Indiana Jones for help in searching for pieces of the key to to the Temple of the Sky. He also believed that the pyramid builders of the Americans were somehow connected to those of the Middle East. Set on finding a crystal skull, Oxley focused his efforts on both Central and South America, spending many years trying to prove his claims. Oxley's main goal during his archaeological career was to prove that legends regarding " El Dorado" were based on fact. Indy's father Henry Walton Jones, Senior even came to know about him and his friendship with his son. ĭuring their time as classmates, Indiana and Oxley frequented the restaurant Gino's for pizza which would soon become a weekly tradition for the two aspiring archaeologists. It was during that time that Oxley first met and became close friends with fellow student Indiana Jones as well as Ravenwood's young daughter Marion. At some point, he relocated to the United States of America where he attended the University of Chicago under Professor Abner Ravenwood. Harold Oxley was born in 1887 in Leeds, England. This boy, fashioning himself " Mutt Williams", quickly befriended Oxley, and considered Harold to be a surrogate father and a kindly uncle figure after his adoptive father's death before both reunited with Mutt's biological progenitor. Oxley was a noted colleague of Indiana, who had unknowingly fathered a son with Marion during a turbulent period in their relationship. Oxley regained his normal demeanor, and later attended the long-delayed wedding of his close friends Marion Ravenwood and Jones. Mistaken as madness by others, this effect eventually wore off when the skull released its mental control on Oxley's brain having accomplished its goal of returning itself to its body, it no longer needed a mortal to act as its avatar in the physical world. The skull hypnotized Oxley into acting as the representative for the skull's thoughts in hopes of finding its way back to the Temple of Akator to leave the Earth, which had the side effect of dumbing down Oxley's intellect. He had an obsession with the legendary crystal skulls purportedly hidden worldwide, and his search eventually led to the discovery of a genuine crystal skull, stolen in the sixteenth century by the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana from the city of Akator, that possessed sentience and psychic powers. Harold Oxley, often referred to (with affection) as "Ox" or "The Oxman" by friends and family, was an English professor of Archaeology who had studied at the University of Chicago alongside the American archaeologist Indiana Jones. He could put you to sleep just by talking." ― Indiana Jones Still, it is an excellent 1950s serial, and I really hope we'll see at least one other Indy film set in this new era." He's a brilliant guy. All-in-all, I really appreciated the film as a whole, although some of the animation and action sequences seemed somewhat unfinished, or at least too difficult to believe (even for an Indy film). I was very impressed by Cate Blanchett, and to my surprise very pleased with Shia LeBeouf's character and acting. There is a lot of computer animation-most of it looks believable, but some of it does not-but that which was done well fits superbly. The camera is certainly held much more stable than many of today's films, and the action is very clear and easy to follow, as is the stunt work great. The cinematography is not the 80s style we'd probably all like, but it's not bad. Beyond that, the plot, characters and acting all fit with this new kind of Indy film. As long as you don't expect another Raiders of the Lost Ark, you'll probably be pleased with the film as it is, with the exception of one sequence which doesn't quite seem to fit. The film itself is well written, and well made with only a few exceptions. I actually think it's a little unfair to present this new type of film under the great Indiana Jones reputation, and however smart marketably I believe this, and the lack of understanding and inaccurate expectations on the audience's behalf will ultimately lead to the film's demise. It certainly overlaps with the previous films, however most of that seems to affect the new film trivially. Frankly, it should be viewed as a new series. The new film is set in the 1950s, and that changes everything. The original three were set in the 1930s, looking for buried treasure in a Treasure of the Sierra Madre style. If you're expecting Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to be a fourth in the series, you'll be disappointed.
